Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue resembling the uterine lining develops outside the uterus leading to pain, inflammation, and potentially impacting fertility. This is a challenging and stressful condition for many women, with statistics indicating that an astonishing 1 in every 7 females in Australia is affected. While conventional treatments such as pain medications, hormonal therapy, and surgery are commonly used, acupuncture offers a natural, complementary approach that may help manage symptoms effectively without the side effects.

How Acupuncture Helps with Endometriosis;

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Perspective

In TCM, endometriosis is often associated with "Blood Stagnation," meaning poor circulation and blockages that lead to pain and inflammation. Acupuncture aims to restore balance by improving blood flow, reducing stagnation, and addressing underlying imbalances mainly in the Liver, Kidney, and Spleen organs and meridians.

From a Scientific Perspective

Acupuncture may help relieve endometriosis symptoms through:

  • Pain Reduction: Stimulating specific acupuncture points triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.

  • Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Acupuncture may reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, helping to alleviate inflammation associated with endometriosis.

  • Hormonal Regulation: By influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, acupuncture can help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce oestrogen dominance, which is often linked to endometriosis.

  • Improved Blood Circulation: Enhancing blood flow to the pelvic region may reduce adhesions, improve oxygenation of tissues, and support overall reproductive health.

  • Lowers CA-125 protein in the blood that is associated with endometriosis

Clinical Research on Acupuncture and Endometriosis

  • A study published in Pain Medicine found that women with endometriosis experienced significant pain relief after regular acupuncture treatments.

  • Another study in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine reported that acupuncture combined with herbal medicine improved symptoms better than conventional drug treatments alone.

  • Research suggests that acupuncture may lower inflammatory markers and improve quality of life for those with endometriosis. A 2017 systematic review of 10 randomised clinical trials involving 589 patients showed that acupuncture can alleviate dysmenorrhea and reduce the levels of the CA-125 protein in the blood (which is a marker that is in the blood that may be elevated in those with endometriosis)

What happens in an acupuncture session for endometriosis?

Below are some examples of acu-points that may be utilized in your session;

  • SP6 (Sanyinjiao): Located on the inner leg, this point helps regulate menstruation and reduce pelvic pain.

  • LV3 (Taichong): Found on the foot, it supports liver function, promotes blood circulation, and alleviates pain.

  • CV4 (Guanyuan): A point on the lower abdomen that nourishes reproductive organs and reduces menstrual discomfort.

  • ST36 (Zusanli): Strengthens digestion and immune function, which can contribute to overall health and symptom management.

  • SP 10 (Xuehai): Above the inner knee. Regulates and clear the blood, particularly in the low abdomen

  • ST 29 (Guilai): On the low abdomen. Rectifies the lower abdomen, alleviates pain and warms the womb

  • Auricular acu-points- such as the uterus, ovary, abdomen or endocrine points may be used

    Additional adjunct therapies utilized during a session;

    • Treatment with Laser and/or TDP/Infrared Therapy might be used on your lower abdomen.

    • If you experience significant menstrual pain, electric acupuncture may be utilized.

    • You may be prescribed some herbs and vitamins or minerals that are particularly suitable for your condition.

Self Help Tips;

  • Dietary Adjustments: Reducing inflammatory foods (such as processed sugars and dairy) and incorporating anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric, leafy greens, and omega-3-rich fish.

  • Herbal Medicine: Traditional Chinese herbal formulas may complement acupuncture by supporting hormonal balance and reducing pain.

  • Lifestyle Changes: Gentle exercise, stress reduction techniques (such as meditation and yoga), and proper sleep hygiene can enhance acupuncture’s effectiveness.

  • Reduce coffee and alcohol

By integrating acupuncture with herbal therapy, lifestyle and dietary modifications, many women find relief from endometriosis pain and experience improved well-being. If you're seeking a natural way to manage symptoms, acupuncture may be a valuable addition to your healthcare routine.
